Water transfer printing, also known as immersion printing, water transfer imaging, hydro dipping, or Hydrographics, is a method of applying printed designs to three-dimensional surfaces. A design is printed into a PVA film, which then dissolves once activated, leaving only the printed design embedded onto the object.
Depending on the quality of the materials used, and the process that was utilized, hydrodipping will last many years; even up to 10-15 years. As with any coating, the better is taken care of, the longer it will last as well.
Short answer: anything that can be submerged in water.
Ideally, items with a hard surface do best; the inked designs need a good surface to adhere to. Clothing and similar material that freely bends and moves will work, however will not typically achieve the best results.
